Mask

Using an old piece of brown paper with markings on from various materials, especially green and purple ink, i drew a face using black fine liner. I really like how the ink has seeped into the paper and mixed with the two colours as they are subtle due to being so dark together. The dark colours hide the fine liner unless looked at properly. I really like how it hides the lines as it shows how the dreamer is lost within their dream.
For this reason i added a piece of netting to cover an eye to create a barrier between the dreamer and reality. I really liked how the light created a shadow of the netting on the page, adding to the darkness already on it.
Lastly, i cut up a plastic mask and added it to the face. The mask represents the person in reality and the face is their identity. It shows how their identity has sunken back into the dreams as they lose them self in reality.

To develop this i would like to develop the drawing style of the face as i find it quite dull and i would like to bring in some techniques i did earlier this year when drawing observational. Also i would like to experiment with light reflecting on the mask, possibly surround the border with colourful lights to represent the dream dancers or pour paint seeping out of the mask.

I circled some colourful lights around the mask to create a reflection. However, the masks didnt really reflect the light as much as i hoped. I tried putting the lights inside the mask which did help make the lights brighter inside but didnt add much to the actual piece. Despite not creating the effect i had hoped for i do believe the light colours created an atmosphere as the piece looked darker when overshadowed by the lights adding to that lost effect, showing how the fantasy has taken over the dreamers life.

I developed this by adding a loose scribble over the face to convey the dreamers loss and confusion. It was difficult to build up this scribble as it didnt like drawing on the ink on the paper.
I also used pens to add small illustrations of flowers around the top of her head. I chose the colours yellow and pink to show happiness, life and comfort (false love from the dream). This is why i didnt colour them all the way, leaving them blank and empty as they are not real.
I really like this added detail as it is subtle but conveys a large link to the overgrown life in my visuals. I also added yellow paint to the netting to show how she is looking into a fantasy which creates her happiness.
I discovered that due to watering down the paint, i could see some of the paint pop in the netting. I thought this was intriguing as it showed how the dream is not real and can be lost in a second.
To develop this i like the idea of putting this piece up in front of a light. Making it shine through the paper as i think the ink and other lines would then be highlighted.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delicate sewing

Artist- Mara Light

Whilst looking at Jenna Andersons art i came across the artist Mara Light. Lights work Focuses on young women in rough, aged appearing paintings. The artists creates beautifully detailed paintings of girls that almost look like porcelain dolls, however the painting itself looks rough and marked up with drips in her work. The contrast of perfection and a sense of neglect to the work conveys the women with the feeling of loss and abandonment. Possibly exposing how their lives are not perfect despite their appearance.       Mara Lights work really captures my attention with the texture as well as the emotions conveyed in the work through the women and their body language. They all look hopeless and lost and all have a story of their own. I have pictured myself creating some artwork with a similar style to Lights and now by using Lights work as a preference i have a chance to look at the details in the rough areas to try and recreate as well as add on extra materials for inst
