I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delicate sewing into the details of the girl for a softer touch but also make her stand out in front of the black and colours, showing how they are in her mind and not her reality.
This idea didnt quite work out. I was trying to draw a round, spiky plant i saw. However, struggled to capture it in a realistic sense. At first i wanted to try create it using colourful pens to show a build up in layers, It became obvious that it wasnt going to work by just drawing straight lines. I tried again using biro hoping that creating the shaded area in the middle would help create definition, although this looked better it still didnt look right to me as i struggled to show the lines that were shorter as they were coming outwards and got lost. My last try in the top corner worked better as it appears with a more 3D appearance by leaving out details and just drawing a few lines to show spikes are all around. To take it further i would add colour by using pencils to add shading through the colours and more definition as i think i lose details when using just one colour in shading.
Next i drew a close up of a face using fine liner and a tight scribbling technique. Usually when drawing i use a biro and a loose continuous line scribble. I decided to try develop my shading technique using a fine liner as i have always struggled doing that. In my opinion the shading turned out quite well and with practice i could develop this further with different shading techniques like cross hatch. I drew this face from memory and randomly, the nose turned out wonky and i feel the lips are unrealistic. I need to improve this by drawing from a picture or a model so i have a face to compare too and be able to add unique details. Planning is key when drawing a face, i never have the patience to draw an outline and slowly build it up which is something i need to work on.
When lying around the pool i decided to try drawing a more simple, modern style of a sunbed.I focused on creating mainly straight lines and little shading and details. I think overall its quite good as it appears quite pristine with the black and white standing out from the blue sky.
I coloured the sky in using a brush pen and then dabbing it with a wet tissue to get rid of overlapping. However some drawn lines weren't straight i needed a ruler to make sure they were straight and measured out equally. It would be interesting to try this style again on another location as the style completely changes the image from the real thing. Additionally, the colour soaked through the page and created random markings on the back. I went round them with biro to make the edges stand out as i like the unpredictability of the markings.
Whilst at the beach i drew some people using a biro and a quick scribble technique. First i drew the two ladies in the water, then the couple walking whilst holding hands. I wasnt able to complete the partner as she clashed with the water reflection. Having to draw quickly made it difficult to draw the details in and focus on making the arms look right, as i had to draw them quickly to get their positions, usually resulting in not drawing the hands and getting incorrect body proportions. I think i need to develop my confidence more as well as my drawing skills to be able to draw like this again.
I really enjoy using colours to create shading as it changes the focus of what catches the attention of the viewer. Colour combinations are really important as they must compliment each other to show shading as well as work together as a whole to create the image. I have done some drawings similar to this before and would definitely like to develop it further and have a go using my own photo or model. For this drawing i used a fine liner to draw over the pencil lines instead of a colour which i believe i used last time. This left the yellow and orange for the shading only, making it brighter against the simple lines.
I did this quick drawing from memory of a dancer from the entertainment one night. They were performing traditional Greek dances followed by a drinking dance where the dancer takes a shot at the end. The dancer i drew is performing the drinking dance. I really dislike his hands as i can only draw them close up, also his body looks really stiff and unrealistic. Overall the drawing looks like a basic cartoon drawing which bugs me as it lacks detail and shading. Whilst away on holiday i listened to music a lot and became quite interested in movement and dancing.

I pretty much dislike the outcome of all my quick sketches as i didnt have time to plan them out and make them look right. Also i got bored easily as i wanted to use other materials but couldnt due to lack of resources on holiday. I used a biro and fine liner to sketch out the chair before using some brush pens to add colour.I guess i like the rough colouring on the chair where you can see white gaps but i think i shouldve kept to one medium such as biro to create shading and detail as together the whole drawings looks a bit lost in its self.
These next two drawings were quick sketches of boats i saw by the sea. I first began drawing with pencil before adding an outline in fine liner. I like the drawing on the left more as i feel there is more detail added on the boat. However, for both drawings the shape of the boat is badly drawn making the whole image look odd. I wanted to draw these images as the boats were empty in an isolated surrounding and that draws my attention in as i find it quite peaceful. I would like to re draw one of these but with more time and planning with a biro to really focus on the shading and details.
I did a few more observational drawings using biro or fine liner. My favourite drawings are the ones of a few stray cats i saw about. Especially the one of the cats head as that cat i became a bit friendly with as he followed me into my hotel room where i gave him some food and water. I also found it easier to draw details and shade when doing a close up of the face. I did shading by creating lines in an up and down motion, which isn't my usual technique but i quite like the outcome. I dislike the silhouette of the cat i drew by scribbling as i feel the shape is off and unrealistic.
My next favourite drawing was the quick sketch of some ladies sitting on the beach in the sea. I enjoy drawing people and like the outcome of this one as their bodies look more natural than my previous drawing tries. However, the shading isnt the best and i still struggled to draw hands. I think to complete this drawing would be to add some details into the scenery so they are set in a location.
This building was by my hotel room and i liked the bright blue colour that it was painted as well as the soft corners it had. My main focus was on the window and light at the bottom that made it look like a little face. I quickly drew this by doing my zig zag shading style. Its quite patchy at the front where the shadow faded darker and i disliked how i drew near the top of the page leaving half the page empty. I seem to do that on a few of my drawings where i place them too close to the side so are unable to draw the whole image.
This next drawing was of a bird i saw in the city of Crete. I wanted to draw the bird as i love the shape of the wings and how they spread out. Also this type of bird had a patch of red on its face which i hadnt really seen before and it was different from the other birds. I got the shape of the bird quite good but the shading was rushed so i would want to improve that by focusing on the details more. Furthermore, i wish i did i quick sketch close up of the wings to focus on the feather details and different shapes the wings can be.
I found a cemented cylinder shape thing with a broken chair placed inside. Abandoned objects really interest me as well as the shape. It was an unusual place to put a chair. I was unhappy with the shading i did on the drawing. I tried to do some cross hatch shading on the bottom of the page. However, whenever i actually try to use cross hatch in a drawing it goes wrong as i cant do large spaces. I understand that its something i need to practice to improve on which i intend to do.
This drawing was of a picture i saw by a tattoo shop. It was quite faded on the wall but i decided to quickly draw it and add some shading on the face as there was a shadow created by a bush near by. I dont like the eyes as i feel i drew them wrong for the face by shape and size. After i used the biro i went over everything using a blue pen continuously. I like the added little bit of colour detail as it doesnt stand out too strongly. Additionally, i like the lines coming out of the head as they are subtle but show lack of control.
I really dislike this drawing as i think my drawing skills have gone down as i think i use to be better at drawing flowers. I kept going over the drawing with different mediums to try cover it up, only making it worse. I used biro to draw the flower original and create shading in the middle. I couldnt make it look like the shading was coming from the i side of the flower where the stem cam eout. I tried to add colour with brush pens. I got bored and randomly drew triangles on top as an abstract version of the flower which i despised so tried to cover it by scribbling an outline with biro. I recreated the original drawing below. I think if i did subtle soft shading and built it up the drawing would look better.
I wanted to draw this plant as i like the sharp, straight lines, layers in the leaves and the change in colour to a faded pink, where the plant had dried up. I used the brush pens to get the light and dark colours as well as the pop of pink. I dont like how i couldnt recreate the straight lines in between the leaves as they were very effective. I wish i was able to build up more layers of the leaves however i felt it wouldve got messy using the brush pens as there wouldnt be a defined line.
I wanted to draw this for the shape and layers in the lines. This was from an empty building. There were quite a few of these around and the lines square/rectangle shapes created were really captivating to me. I used my brush pen to draw out the building before outlining and adding loose shading with fine liner. I know the angle of the drawing is off which made the side of the building wrong which bugs me a lot.
I did another drawing of a different building, straight on so i would only get the basic shapes on top of each other. I like the idea of printing these lines onto something when building up materials for the background as it is something i can experiment with.
I decided to add drawing to some photos i took. The first photo was of some rocks placed down on the ground which i thought looked like a turtle so i decided to add in the shell. I did this again with the next photo as i thought the shadows of the shutters appeared like butterfly wings.
This one didn't quite work as the angle of the photo was off. The next photo i took of a grave yard. I had the idea of drawing some dark figures in the grave yard. It was difficult to get the size right to look as if they were actually interacting in that space. I also didnt notice the lack of floor space in this specific picture. Lastly, i cut out some women dancing in photos i had taken. Again they look out of place due to size and spacing but it reminded me of this Disney princess book i had that was magnetic and i could place the princesses and princes in them.
The next few drawings were quick sketches i did using pencil. This first one im mostly happy with as i think i drew some features quite well, however i know they still look a bit off and i should build up some shading.
This drawing of this door i wanted to do due to its round shape of the building as well as the curve of the door. Doors interest me as they lead to somewhere new and unknown which is why i took a few photos of different doors in Spinalonga. I think to improve this drawing i would need to complete the brick work on the building and dark shading on the door to show the dark wood it was made from.
This quick sketch is one of my worse as i quickly drew the outlines and its hard to make out what it is. I wanted to draw the shape of the door frame and the beams of an empty ruin on the island of Spinalonga. As i drew this i noticed the conditions of the walls where the plaster had came off exposing the brick work. and i really like appearance of the materials. Furthermore, i noticed the shelf in the wall that i badly included in the drawing as i had already drew the wall so it looks out of place. I think i like this image more for the bricks and broken plaster which i could recreate in some work later on.
These two drawings of women im a little pleased with. The one on the right i did in a more simplistic style with no shading or details. I quite like her basic outline however i wish i worked more detail into the fruit boxes she was look into as the basic outline is at the wrong angle and i think adding some details there would help set her location and what she is doing. On the other hand, the drawing on the left i included some shading. The drawing is alright as i feel her body proportions are quite good, however i couldnt draw her hands as they were too small for me.
I did this drawing as i liked the composition of the bottles between a rock but still touching each other. I drew the rock with fine liner in a quick sketchy style that looks a bit like scratches to make it look more harsh, cold and sharp like the rock. I dislike the drawing of the bottles as i drew the shape of the bottles wrong, loosing the 3D look as well as making them look too small. I shaded them badly and tried to rub out bits but couldnt make it appear like the sunlight shining on the glass. I definitely need to improve the shading of the glass and add details to show the glass through the bottle.
I did some cross hatching in this drawing but only to make the rope stand out more from the metal. I wanted to draw this as i thought the different directions of the rope and the metal hooks was interesting with how they wrapped around and layered over each other. I think to improve this drawing i need to add more shading onto the hooks and build up the cross hatching to make it stronger. Furthermore, i drew the ropes terribly and would need to re do them so it looks like the rope is entwined with each other and add detailed lines into the rope.
Lastly, i wanted to draw this tree as i really liked the shape. The way the tree split off into two directions, showing the sea between it, caught my attention as it acted as a frame to view through. Furthermore, i liked the composition of the three tires that were tied to the bottom of the tree. However, in the drawing i didn't draw the tires right so they didn't look realistic. I want to do another drawing where its more focused on the tires so i can get the rubber detail in with other markings, the shape right and work on the shading.
