Experimenting with Projector

Using a clear folder wallet to replace the use of acetate, i drew from the image of my canvas painting using a dark green marker pen and a lighter green to add some shading. I also drew from a photo i took of a building on the island of Spinalonga. I like this simple drawing as the lack of border makes it appear as if its a simple illustration in a book. I re drew this in a bigger scale and layered the girl drawing over it. I like the option of layering these images as there are endless possibilities to different materials and compositions.
I wanted to put these two together as the island ruins inspired me by the way it looked rough and abandoned. I adored the textures of the bricks and broken wood, the atmosphere of this place felt right to the visuals and meaning of the song to me. As i walked round i pictured what the buildings looked like when they were being used, picturing the islanders lives. Similar to how in the song the singer goes on about this life she has created in her mind with her crush before realising it is not real. Her detachment from reality made her like a lost ghost (in all white) so by using the acetate i could create her outline but she would still be see through. Allowing the viewer to see the empty room behind her. I would like to devlop these further by trying different materials like paint and different backgrounds, experimenting with the composition and images.

Whilst with the projector, i screwed up a small piece of acetate as i found the sound very satisfying. I decided to place it on the projector to find it creates an interesting shadow with the creases. I could create a painting but then use the projector with a cut out of the girl in acetate to create a shadow. This may not work depending how the background is painted as the shadow will not show up strongly on a dark background. Using a plastic wallet i quickly drew out the images from the glass painting to see how the screwed up acetate could create motion in the flowing skirt. It would be really cool to try creating an image by placing and folding acetate on the projector, possibly adding some wire to create bold lines.

I really dislike the drawing i did as i rushed it and wanted to focus on the dress. However, the shadow created by the acetate i thought worked really well as it looks like layers of the dress moving. I tried different times with screwing the acetate differently but didnt get the same effect that i thought worked. Additionally the acetate began to unscrew quickly. I like using 3D aspects with mixed media in my work so by creating fabric that could be folded or made to stick out of the painting intrigues me and would help bring the dancers out of the painting as if they are beginning to join our reality.

The last piece that i created is my favourite as i used different materials. I drew a basic flower from my photo of the orange flowers, using a black marker and filling in the petals with a yellow highlighter. The highlighter was able to rub out some of the marker which i now wish i took further. I could of scribbled black marker then used the highlight to rub away lines. Finally, using tippex, i added some rough, random brushed lines over part of the image. I like the idea of doing something similar with my paintings to mimic the collapsing ruins of the island with rough brush strokes whilst also created a block to show how the viewer can not step into that daydream.
The image improved on the projector as the white tippex turned black creating a stronger, dirtier feel as the image looked darker and faded. I feel like the flower is the girls love that she has created in her mind and is now painting over it to forget. I placed my hand in front of the projector to see if i could create a shadow with it. The image became more faded and the yellow discoloured, almost unable to see the colour against the wall. I felt it showed progress in the story, as if she wasnt able to block out her feelings but instead let them fade away in her mind as she holds on ever so slightly.
Next, i incorporated wire into my work. I created loops to imitate the petals. I really like the bold lines created when on the projector as i feel it adds to the affect of what the love use to be. The petals have began to shrink from the larger ones leaving only left overs bones, outline of the wire. I took a photo of the same image but of it actually on the projector itself as i found the light underneath interesting. Its glowing and warm, very welcoming. It changes the tone of the shrivelling leftover love. Possibly, leaving the love behind in the light or it shows why she holds onto her daydream as it creates her happiness.

The last thing i did with the projector was hold up a piece of wallpaper that had smooth bumps on. It added a subtle effect of softening the image up close. I think i would like to experiment with this, trying different colours and patterns, even objects to see how it changes the image projected. When placed on a large object i believe the image may curl over it, creating a melting look depending on the shape of the object. However, i became more intrigued with the effect of bringing the wallpaper closer to the projector and how the movement changed the image. When held slightly in front of the wall, the wallpaper creates a black shadow border between the image which i thought looked quite effective as if we were lifting off the 2D image into our world and space.

When moving closer to the projector, the image began to grow smaller and out of focus. Eventually leaving only the boldest lines. I really like this abstract shadow that was created as the markings are left behind, as if they remain subtly in her mind forever. I also thought the movement of the image growing smaller showed the story visually of her trying to forget and suppressing the daydream into the back of her mind.

Lastly, i took this photo close up of my friend who was experimenting with wire. She had wrapped the wires around her head, creating interesting lines that overlapped. I took the photo at a high angle to focus on the wire, as well as capturing her eye. I wanted to include her eye as eyes are windows to the soul and when creating that canvas painting i decided i will create some more from different angles and experimenting with the eyes. This image inspires me as it is close up and personal. I could create those same lines on the painting but include a few stars to shows how the girl is lost daydreaming in her own world.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delicate sewing

Artist- Mara Light

Whilst looking at Jenna Andersons art i came across the artist Mara Light. Lights work Focuses on young women in rough, aged appearing paintings. The artists creates beautifully detailed paintings of girls that almost look like porcelain dolls, however the painting itself looks rough and marked up with drips in her work. The contrast of perfection and a sense of neglect to the work conveys the women with the feeling of loss and abandonment. Possibly exposing how their lives are not perfect despite their appearance.       Mara Lights work really captures my attention with the texture as well as the emotions conveyed in the work through the women and their body language. They all look hopeless and lost and all have a story of their own. I have pictured myself creating some artwork with a similar style to Lights and now by using Lights work as a preference i have a chance to look at the details in the rough areas to try and recreate as well as add on extra materials for inst
