Mirror and Paint

Using a mirror, i reflected one of my pieces by standing it next to the painting. I wanted to reverse the words i wrote. Some people believe mirrors are a door way to another universe and i thought it would be interesting to use that idea to convey the dream world or looking into reality from the fantasy side.    I then used a pallet knife to paint onto the mirror. I really like the way the paint mixes here and how it has moved on the mirror.   To develop this i wish i stood the two mirrors facing each other to create an infinite reflection. I would also like to try painting an actual image on the mirror. I could paint dancers on one mirror, then the background scenery on the other, make them reflect into each other. Then if the viewer stands in the middle it separates the fantasy.   I also took a photo of the wire on top of the mirror from the side as i like how you cant tell it lifts up from the bottom. Its very subtle as it blends in with the mirror.          I al

DDTK Canvas Painting + Light

I looked into how light changed the painting on the canvas. I discovered how the light shone through the back, losing the colour in the paint and showing rough brush strokes. The sections of the face that look incredibly light added a sense of loss of form as if the dreamer wasn't really in solid form and disconnected completely. I found that by moving the canvas away from the light, the painting faded similarly showing how the dreamer loses their identity and becoming a ghost.     I also took a video of the light moving in the reflection of the glass, similar to how the light reflected in the plastic frame of the film. I really like how it moves across in a line as if it is wiping the dreamers mind clean. I also like how the gaps between the glass breaks up the line sectioning it yet when looking at the video overall the eyes blur that line into one showing how many things influence dreams, building it up until it overtakes the dreamer.

Film Footage

Using a frame i picked up in IKEA seven years ago, i created a short series of watercolour painted images of the dreamer breaking out of her fantasy. I used biro and a little fine liner to draw an outline and add detail to the images. I wish i had enough time to develop my painting skill to create shading and more realistic painting of the garden. To develop this i will create some dried poured paint and add it to the end image. I will do this to show how her fantasy has fallen apart and is dripping out as she breaks out.    I wanted to take this picture as my attention was caught by how the light reflected in the plastic. Creating a wavy line across the set of images. It reminds me of moments in films where they show the characters transition as the world changes as they step into a dream or another dimension. I thought it was interesting as the light prevents the viewer from seeing the full image which i have tried with using paint and printing over images. I never thought abo

Doll Movemnt

I hooked some wire to the doll and spun her around in front of a light to create a shadow. The movement of the doll was difficult to create a smooth, constant spin due to not having an easy grip on the wire. To fix this i need to make the wire more stable and hang it from the ceiling. I was intrigued by the shadow on the wall as it is not of a solid form and thought it would be an interesting way to show the dancers in the singers dream. For instant using the canvas painting of the singers face and creating shadows to dance across it. Furthermore, i would like to pour paint on the felt dancer and let it drip to show how the dreamer has succumbed to living in the fantasy.     I used the felt dancer to attempt a mini final piece idea. I hung the dancer up using wire and held a plastic circle above her. Then i proceeded to use wool to wrap around the circle to create a cage. I found this difficult to keep clear and think it would work better using wire then weaving the wool betw

Snow Drawing on Glass

Whilst decorating my house for Christmas i created some drawings using snow spray on the window and a spatula. I really liked using this medium as it was easy and i could create a lot of interesting effects depending on what sort of spray was used. I first used a spray that dried quickly and found if sprayed on thickly it created cracks. I thought this was easier to use in order to shape things and remove marks. The other spray was more wet so when moved around it would leave marks.    The images are easier to see at night with a dark background but i thought they could look good if in front of a sun set or having a light shone through it. However, the cracks are easier to see in the day, making the house look old and forgotten.        Unfortunately, i ran out of the dry spray so had to use the wet one when actually trying to create something for my art. I drew a dancer on my window and removed the spray in the middle of her dress so most of her body was see through

Mask

Using an old piece of brown paper with markings on from various materials, especially green and purple ink, i drew a face using black fine liner. I really like how the ink has seeped into the paper and mixed with the two colours as they are subtle due to being so dark together. The dark colours hide the fine liner unless looked at properly. I really like how it hides the lines as it shows how the dreamer is lost within their dream.      For this reason i added a piece of netting to cover an eye to create a barrier between the dreamer and reality. I really liked how the light created a shadow of the netting on the page, adding to the darkness already on it.      Lastly, i cut up a plastic mask and added it to the face. The mask represents the person in reality and the face is their identity. It shows how their identity has sunken back into the dreams as they lose them self in reality.    To develop this i would like to develop the drawing style of the face as i find it quite du

Layout: Lost

I considered covering this watercolour painting with the acetate covered in white paint and ink so it would show through the gaps and the scratches. However once i peeled this paint mixture out of the mask and saw how it dried with a hole in the middle, i thought it worked more perfectly as it showed the dreamer looking out behind a barricade, unable to join in with reality due to their daydreaming.     I experimented with both sides of placing the paint peel on top. One side was more like a bowl, bringing the eye closer to the surface whilst the other side was raised up and shadowing over the eye, making ti appear as if the dreamer is falling below and further out of reach.     However, i wanted to show the dreamer watching reality due to their disconnection not the dreamer falling further out of reach. Additionally, i considered how closing the book would possibly flatten the peel so decided on the side that was like a bowl, so the eye was more visible and centre of attention.

PVA Glue Paint Mix

Using a plastic mask, i poured PVA glue in and spread it about in hopes so i could add paint and peel it out afterwards. This PVA glue breaks up the paint when added. I mixed a lot of blue in so the peel would be a deep blue like a deep ocean to express a sad, isolated emotion to convey the dreamer drowning in their mind. I proceeded to add yellow, white, pink and black. The other colours are to represent the other colourful dancers to show how they are still present even if this colour is dominating right now.   I found the movement of the paint spreading incredibly interesting as it instantly began to disperse and lose its colour amongst the blue. Unfortunately, i couldnt get the PVA glue to settle and dry with the black paint present like in the second video as i couldnt set the mask down flat.     Using the edge of a pallet knife, i pulled the white paint out. I really enjoyed doing this and being able to mix the colour in the moment. Again the PVA glue wouldnt settle so i

Shadows: Paint on Acetate

I scrunched up a piece of acetate and proceeded to loosely add blue paint with a paint brush, i added more paint to a crack in the middle to add depth. Then i dripped watered down, green, paint and watched it follow the cracks in the acetate.    I became very intrigued with the shadow the markings cast when shining a light on it. I could create a flip book by using acetates and filming the shadows. I would also like to create a shadow with colours, i believe i could do this by using ink instead of paint. Furthermore, i would like to creaet shadow versions of the dancers to shine onto a painting of the dreamer to show how they are in her mind, i could also use lights that flash so they could softly fade in and out.

Artist: Spencer Jenkins

Visited a local gallery showing Jenkins work. He does a mix of sculptures and prints using wood and bright colours.    I was intrigued with the compositions of shapes and lines in his colourful work. Additionally, i adore bright colours and this made me think of a different way to show the dancers colours in my work.       I really like the form of the triangle sculpture as it looked different in other angles, making it intriguing to move around. Furthermore, the shadows that it created as the lines merged together. I would of loved to play with light and see the shadows move. I also like the print in the back of the sculpture photo as the circle is very bold against all the lines in all his work.     I also like this print as the white boarder is broken by the shapes not creating a straight edge. I love how the lines cross over going in different directions.     Additionally, this print for using only pink for bright colour as i forget to mix the two combinations i either sti

Paint and PVA Glue Experiment Continues

Using the same mixture i used for the second net experiment. I dripped the paint on the acetate. It looked really beautiful when it was wet, especially how the colours mixed and moved together. Unfortunately i lost the detail slightly as it dried. The colours became more dull and the mixture was weak which showed once dry. There is still really nice sections like the yellow turning green in the blue and how the blue crosses over to red. Unfortunately, some drips broke when pulled up due to the weakness.    To improve this i will make a stronger mixture and build up the drips with layers so they are thicker.    I decided to use a different PVA glue which worked really well with the paint. However, i used it differently so didnt find out if the first PVA glue was the mixtures problem. I poured PVA glue onto acetate which had some yellow and green print marks on. I did this as the glue picked up the colours on the back. Then i painted on the glue layer. Using mainly blue and occ
