Flip Book Development

I created another flip book to develop my skill further. I drew people instead of stick figures and drew a background to set the scene. I struggled with tiny features such as hands and faces so didnt draw them. I also didn't include any shadows as in dreams usually people dont see their reflection or shadows. I painted with watercolour so the colour was not too bold and distracting from the movement.

I drew over lines using biro so they would stand out as the watercolour did fade the pencil lines. However, i think the watercolour softened the pages, making them easier to flip. I personally dont like the cartoon style of the drawings, due to the lack of detail. Furthermore, sizes of the tree, building and people do change throughout the pages. However i dont think it is as bad as my first tries especially towards the end i think the sizes stay pretty much the same.

Last of all, i ran out of pages towards the end meaning there are a few jumps between the movements. I focused too much on the dancers walking towards each other meaning i miss out on the important movement of dancing. To improve this i should start from the end and work my way down to the beginning so i focused more on the dancing. Additionally, i would like to try bring mixed media into this but i fear that adding fabric or other materials could cause problems with flipping the pages due to extra weight or materials that stick out. It could be interesting to create a flip book by cutting out pages so when they all join together it creates a 4D image.

Artist: Zarah Abraham

I came across this artist when looking into movement. She films herself drawing with charcoal and creates the marks by moving her body- dancing on the canvas. The marks captures the movements that she creates when listening to music. I would love to try this to draw the movements of the dancers that i vision. I believe it would be difficult to capture as i am not a dancer but i will definitely try beginning with charcoal and possibly moving onto paint as i would love to see how the colours mix when using my body.     I didnt really explore Abrahams style and incorporate it into my work as much as i wanted to as it was difficult to find a way to combine this style at a large scale with other materials. If i had more time i would of used this as a starting point to explore paint, printing and other materials layered up using my body. I feel this would have been a completely different investigation if i had done this.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delica...

Development:

I decided to develop the drawings i did when experimenting with the use of the projector. I felt that these drawings were quite bad as they were quick sketches and details were out of place. For instance the scribbles on the dancers faces look odd and ruin the drawing. As i was looking into rough painting i decided to try experiment with the style. I think between the two my favourite outcome of the paint is of the face, The random pop of colour in the hair and mix of bright colours. I quite like the outcome when using a pallet knife and scraping it down the page with all the colours. The way the colours mix and still stand out from one another. Furthermore, adding paint to the drawing helped illuminate the green pen drawing. On the other hand some features are out of place, for instance the eyes are slightly ff and the lips.    For the dancers, i found acrylic paint to be too runny to mix with colours. I think oil paint might work better. I got the paint...
