Cracks

I took a few photos of cracks in the wall before they were filled in. I found the cracks incredibly interesting as they were deep in the wall and quite wide. I thought these would be a useful reference for the buildings in my visuals as the walls are cracking/falling apart as they turn into ruins. I thought the lines they created were intriguing as they are all connected but also thought i could try to re create them in my art. For instance layering paint then creating these lines, i could possibly draw the cracks over a painting of a girls face to show how this is in her mind or how she is trapped behind the walls. Or i could paint on some wood and actually carve the cracks into the wood.

Close up of cracks showed layers in the walls with paint, cement and brick. I noticed the colours red, brown and green. The green surprised me, however this is a useful reference for a colour pallet when creating a piece focused on the ruin building. I also noticed the rough edges in contrast to the straight edges of the top layer crack on the wall. I plan to try recreate this by possibly adding something to create a rougher/harder texture in the paint.

I dripped dirty water from the dust created when my dad chipped the wall away. I liked this as the water substance is natural and the drips don't appear forced.

Artist: Zarah Abraham

I came across this artist when looking into movement. She films herself drawing with charcoal and creates the marks by moving her body- dancing on the canvas. The marks captures the movements that she creates when listening to music. I would love to try this to draw the movements of the dancers that i vision. I believe it would be difficult to capture as i am not a dancer but i will definitely try beginning with charcoal and possibly moving onto paint as i would love to see how the colours mix when using my body.     I didnt really explore Abrahams style and incorporate it into my work as much as i wanted to as it was difficult to find a way to combine this style at a large scale with other materials. If i had more time i would of used this as a starting point to explore paint, printing and other materials layered up using my body. I feel this would have been a completely different investigation if i had done this.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delica...

Development:

I decided to develop the drawings i did when experimenting with the use of the projector. I felt that these drawings were quite bad as they were quick sketches and details were out of place. For instance the scribbles on the dancers faces look odd and ruin the drawing. As i was looking into rough painting i decided to try experiment with the style. I think between the two my favourite outcome of the paint is of the face, The random pop of colour in the hair and mix of bright colours. I quite like the outcome when using a pallet knife and scraping it down the page with all the colours. The way the colours mix and still stand out from one another. Furthermore, adding paint to the drawing helped illuminate the green pen drawing. On the other hand some features are out of place, for instance the eyes are slightly ff and the lips.    For the dancers, i found acrylic paint to be too runny to mix with colours. I think oil paint might work better. I got the paint...
