Print Making

I created some prints to experiment with mark making and colour. I want to incorporate rough paint strokes of colour into my painting, inspired by Mara Lights rough textures of paint drips. I thought print making was a good way to start of boldly. I used a mirror for my template and tried different objects such as tape, pen lids, combs, fingers and a pallet knife to create marks. I really like the purple prints where i used a comb to create wavy lines, overlapping them as the outcome is unpredictable but controlled. I also really like creating a gradient between colours or adding a little bit of white without mixing it in so the ink in the print appears rough.

I made a creative choice to not change my paper with ink marks on as i find the markings intriguing. The way the ink layers as i created more prints, the markings were unique and i like the idea of using them in a background.I especially like the marks across the top where i was cleaning a pallet knife and got to see the different colours mix together as i scraped it onto the page.

I placed ink on the glass and moved it across a piece of paper. It was difficult to remove the paper afterwards but it helped create interesting ripples in the ink. I broke the glass into three pieces and place them together on black paper, helping the paint to really stand out. I like creating sections in the glass as the pieces still fit together- they show how maladaptive daydreamers can be dissociated from reality but still function as the glass pieces still fit together. I would like to create a drawing to place behind the glass to follow my idea of painting over the top of the image to prevent the viewer from seeing it clearly.

I scraped the ink off the mirror to clean it after multiple uses and discovered i liked the lines it had created. It gave me the idea of painting onto a tv screen that shows a video of the dancers. i would remove some paint for parts to be visible. I like this idea as it prevents the viewer from fully seeing the daydream as it is not theirs. It also shows the disconnection from reality as the dreamer becomes trapped in their fantasy and miss things happening around them as they are not paying attention. I would also like to experiment with creating markings on mirrors with different coloured inks and creating different marks with the pallet knife as it shows how a maladaptive daydreamer feels as if they lose their personality as they only live in their dreams which holds their true identity.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delicate sewing

Artist- Mara Light

Whilst looking at Jenna Andersons art i came across the artist Mara Light. Lights work Focuses on young women in rough, aged appearing paintings. The artists creates beautifully detailed paintings of girls that almost look like porcelain dolls, however the painting itself looks rough and marked up with drips in her work. The contrast of perfection and a sense of neglect to the work conveys the women with the feeling of loss and abandonment. Possibly exposing how their lives are not perfect despite their appearance.       Mara Lights work really captures my attention with the texture as well as the emotions conveyed in the work through the women and their body language. They all look hopeless and lost and all have a story of their own. I have pictured myself creating some artwork with a similar style to Lights and now by using Lights work as a preference i have a chance to look at the details in the rough areas to try and recreate as well as add on extra materials for inst
