I went to a ballet class to take photos of dance positions to use in my art and understand the movement of ballet more. I found it incredibly helpful as i now understand how some of the choreography works and processes of performing the dance. I find ballet really beautiful and elegant, all the dancers appeared very calm and relaxed as they performed. However, when talking to a few after their class i was told how they were frustrated on their mistakes and the pain that comes with ballet on the inside but performing did help them feel calm and was enjoyable. I thought this was similar with the emotions i was presenting in my visuals. In real life the singer appears calm however on the inside she is full of anxiety which is conveyed through the dance of the other dancers (her thoughts and emotions) hence why she appears most calm as she watches them.
It was difficult to get clear photos when the dancers were moving however the blurs help show that there is movement and it could be interesting to try and recreate that in my work. I also took a few videos of the dancers as it is easier to capture movement and not miss shots in between taking photos. i will use these to draw from and make future references in my work, especially if i try taking my own videos to experiment with. I do plan to make videos and hopefully use old film so i could have a frozen image story to work on similar to the artist Felix Kalmenson.
This is one of my favourite photos as the dancers appear as if they are holding hands however when you look at there reflection in the mirror you see they are actually standing apart and not touching at all. I thought it showed how the singer surrounds herself in her dreams for comfort but in reality she is still alone and struggling toreach out to other people. I also thought the mirror trick was quite interesting and took a few photos where i could see the dancers reflection repeating on in the mirrors.
Using the photos i took i created a few animations to help show the process of their movements between shots. I edited them together to create a short video.
