Observational Drawings of Installation

I did some observational drawings of this piece whilst it was hanging. I wish that i drew these at a different perspective and angle to show i am looking at a piece hanging, creating formation and an object, instead i drew what i saw straight on of the board and not the actual board itself.
All drawings were drawn in four minutes.

My first drawing was a continuous line using biro. I quite enjoyed this technique as it is very free flowing. However, i struggle to focus on capturing details and creating shading. I think i need to improve this by focusing on one singular object at a time.I also found that i just drew one line to represent the string, making them appear as violent scribbles instead of string. I see the benefit of this appearance as it shows frustration of the singer who feel trapped, however i grew annoyed as i wanted to draw the string.

This drawing is difficult to see as i used coloured pencils that did not have sharpened edges. Additionally i used yellow which interesting created some green shades when mixed with blue but mostly did not create a good outcome as it was difficult to see the lines. I think to improve this i need to add some lines, not everywhere, in a bolder colour. I drew this by having the yellow pencil in my left hand and the blue in my right. I drew them together, the yellow following the blue. It was not as difficult as i thought it would be to draw two at once and use my left hand  but i did not like this process as occasionally the pencils got in the way of each other.

I drew this using a black and blue biro together in one hand. I really enjoyed this process as i found watching two lines created together incredibly satisfying. It created an almost 3D effect without the glasses. I would definitely like to try this again to create a shadow or ghost of what use to be of the girl in the real world, the personality and identity she feels she has lost from living in a dream.
I did try to develop this by drawing with four pens. I used a metal bar, similar to what i used in the installation piece to poke the pens through and draw together. Once again i found it very satisfying but the more pens the bigger the drawing so to improve i would like to try a drawing using this technique but i would need a bigger canvas to complete a full image. I could draw the dancers, all in their respected colour.

Artist: Zarah Abraham

I came across this artist when looking into movement. She films herself drawing with charcoal and creates the marks by moving her body- dancing on the canvas. The marks captures the movements that she creates when listening to music. I would love to try this to draw the movements of the dancers that i vision. I believe it would be difficult to capture as i am not a dancer but i will definitely try beginning with charcoal and possibly moving onto paint as i would love to see how the colours mix when using my body.     I didnt really explore Abrahams style and incorporate it into my work as much as i wanted to as it was difficult to find a way to combine this style at a large scale with other materials. If i had more time i would of used this as a starting point to explore paint, printing and other materials layered up using my body. I feel this would have been a completely different investigation if i had done this.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delica...

Development:

I decided to develop the drawings i did when experimenting with the use of the projector. I felt that these drawings were quite bad as they were quick sketches and details were out of place. For instance the scribbles on the dancers faces look odd and ruin the drawing. As i was looking into rough painting i decided to try experiment with the style. I think between the two my favourite outcome of the paint is of the face, The random pop of colour in the hair and mix of bright colours. I quite like the outcome when using a pallet knife and scraping it down the page with all the colours. The way the colours mix and still stand out from one another. Furthermore, adding paint to the drawing helped illuminate the green pen drawing. On the other hand some features are out of place, for instance the eyes are slightly ff and the lips.    For the dancers, i found acrylic paint to be too runny to mix with colours. I think oil paint might work better. I got the paint...
