Development of Felt Doll

When working on my last sketchbook, instead of washing off left over paint i used a pallet knife to scrape it onto a scrap piece of paper. This started with the colours blue and green, then added a layer of purple. Lastly i was able to add yellow, red and black. I was worried about covering up too much of the white gaps as i liked the negative space between the paint lines that also showed the paint fading.
However, i now have this contrast of the black and red corners compared to the other more empty side. I believe this shows the downfall into daydreaming constantly. The empty side shows the appeal of dreaming with the bright colours and empty gaps representig a space to breathe. Then the dreamer falls down into the fuller side where the dreaming begins to take control as the colours turn darker with black and red.
To develop this i would recreate this on a canvas and do a series showing the same colour combination but try different ways of creating it. Such as pouring paint in layers so it has a smoother appearance as the colours mix.

Using this as a background, i took the felt doll i created earlier this year and poured a mix of white paint, water and PVA glue. I let the mixture drip down onto the paper to see what shape it would create and to show a connection between the two pieces. I decided to use white to show how the dreamers fall into their dream world made them lose their identity and become a ghost in their reality.
I found that i really liked the texture of the felt where the mixture had poured and dried. It pushed the felt together on the skirt, losing the fluffy touch and became thin and solid. It felt rough to touch like part of the doll and been made into a fragile statue.
Additionally, through the mixture i could see purple lines from the felt, creating a scribbly layer within the paint, reflecting the scribbling drawing technique i chose. I adore the texture/material created by adding this mixture to felt and could develop this by shaping this material to create a solid sculpture or other fabric materials.
The way the mixture dripped onto the paper showed the fall into reaming. as the thinner drips pour down into large thick groups on the darker side showing how easy it is to start and how difficult it is to stop.

I stuck the felt doll onto the piece of paper with her head next to the darker side to show how that has consumed her mind the most and beginning to take over her life. I think to develop this i would stick her down beforehand and then pour the paint on, also make a thicker mixture so it dries a brighter white on the felt doll.
I created holes in the paper and threaded through a wire, wrapping it around the body to create a cage with a piece of netting. Re creating an old final piece idea with a rope cage and abstract hung materials to represent the dancer. To create more impact i think i would need to build up the wire wrapped around the body so it is more noticeable and shows how she is trapped more strongly.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delicate sewing

Artist- Mara Light

Whilst looking at Jenna Andersons art i came across the artist Mara Light. Lights work Focuses on young women in rough, aged appearing paintings. The artists creates beautifully detailed paintings of girls that almost look like porcelain dolls, however the painting itself looks rough and marked up with drips in her work. The contrast of perfection and a sense of neglect to the work conveys the women with the feeling of loss and abandonment. Possibly exposing how their lives are not perfect despite their appearance.       Mara Lights work really captures my attention with the texture as well as the emotions conveyed in the work through the women and their body language. They all look hopeless and lost and all have a story of their own. I have pictured myself creating some artwork with a similar style to Lights and now by using Lights work as a preference i have a chance to look at the details in the rough areas to try and recreate as well as add on extra materials for inst
