Paint Pouring on Flowers

For my final piece i bought artificial flowers to use to create a dream catcher to hang in front of the wood canvas. I decided to use artificial flowers to convey how dreams are not real but also how a dream doesnt die for a manipulative dreamer. I chose the spiky flowers as well as i remember seeing similar plants in Crete that i took a photo of. This plant doesnt look gentle, welcoming even. It difficult to touch showing this guard that the dreamer put up to protect them self from their day stress.
I decided to pour paint on the flowers in the same colours on the wooden circle to represent the emotions of the dreamer that take over their reality and create their dreams. Originally, i wanted to pour paint on them in a way where the drips would dry whilst falling from the plant. However, i did not have the resources to make that happen as well as decided it would be too heavy on the plants, covering them too much. Again i wanted the blue and purple colour to dominate or be on most of the plants to show the fear and anxiety that is at the core of the dreaming. I plan to hang these upside down amongst broken glass to act as a dream catcher in my final piece.
To improve this, i would probably make the paint drips down the stem as well as i focused on the leaves and flower heads. Additionally, i think i should have been more bold with the amount of paint poured on the flowers so they appear more dramatic and catches the eye better.

Whilst pouring the paint i painted a clear, plastic mask. On the outside i used yellow to show the joy and excitement of daydreaming for everyone. However i used my pallet knife to create spiky points in the centre to show how it is a guard to protect them self. Due to being the same colour the spikes blend in conveying how no one can really tell who a maladaptive daydreamer is. On the inside of the mask i scratched blue and purple paint on. When the viewer puts on the mask they see the truth when inside the mind of the dreamer. I held the mask in front of the dripping paint and really liked the effect of the colours standing out from the black as it creates this void and loss of self. I matched the mask up with the blue drips making it look as if part of the mask. Problem is the viewer would have difficulty looking at both sides of mask if it was fixed in place. However i could have the mask hung in front of the board so they choose to look through it creating that sense of staring off into nowhere whilst dreaming.
I also used the flowers to recreate the other mask piece i created where the flower illustrations grew out of the head. I held the mask so the flowers were seen in the forehead, as well as holding them in a bunch and letting the mask rest in front. I think i preferred the second version as the flowers had a bigger impact, looking overgrown and wild. To develop this i would cut a hole in the head so flowers could poke out from the mask I could create a bunch of plants growing on a wall, dripping with paint. Then have a few different masks hanging amongst them some completely painted, others more torn and broken. This could show the process of falling into more dreaming and losing one self in it.
Lastly, i took this photo of paint mixing together. I mixed watered down blue paint into normal white acrylic. The choose of colours made the way the paint mix very dreamy and soft. Almost cloud like. I found when using two opposite colours its easier to see the little lines of colour spiral together and run as they mix. I tried printing paper into the paint but due to the movement of pulling the paper up, it lost the little lines in the colours and just mixed together.

Crete: Drawings

I took a sketchbook with me to Crete, on the plane i doodled this out of boredom. Using coloured pens i created random patterns and lines to draw out the front of a girl. Then using black Biro i added outlines and scribbled her hair and over onto the back of the page. To me this shows a process of turning boredom and negative emotions into creativity and art. The scribbles become less and eventually turn into the colourful patterns before fading completely. I really like the idea conveyed in this drawing, however i dont like the basic cartoon style as i think it shows my lack of drawing skills. The whole piece looks like a doodle and a bit messy. Especially with how the scribbles come out of the hair. I think recreating this with paint would create a better outcome. Instead of patterns it would be a strong mix of bright colours that is faded together like a light cloud. Compared to a mix of black and grey at the back with drips and harsh lines. I could also add some delicate sewing

Artist- Mara Light

Whilst looking at Jenna Andersons art i came across the artist Mara Light. Lights work Focuses on young women in rough, aged appearing paintings. The artists creates beautifully detailed paintings of girls that almost look like porcelain dolls, however the painting itself looks rough and marked up with drips in her work. The contrast of perfection and a sense of neglect to the work conveys the women with the feeling of loss and abandonment. Possibly exposing how their lives are not perfect despite their appearance.       Mara Lights work really captures my attention with the texture as well as the emotions conveyed in the work through the women and their body language. They all look hopeless and lost and all have a story of their own. I have pictured myself creating some artwork with a similar style to Lights and now by using Lights work as a preference i have a chance to look at the details in the rough areas to try and recreate as well as add on extra materials for inst
