Paint Pouring Video- first try

Mixture of acrylic paint, PVA glue and water. Accidentally added too much water making the mixture too runny and colour dried faded. Also the paint colours mixed easily, losing the original colours. Here is a photo of blue and red mixture together, i really like the blued edges as you can see it slowly change into purple. I found that when i moved the page the blue mixture was hidden underneath the purple and became dominant. However, eventually the red mixed in and took over. To improve this i woul.d like to try different combinations of colours and see how they mixed together. Additionally, add less water so the mixture is not too runny on the page.     The remainder of the mixture ran off onto the page below, I moved the page around to watch the colours interact and mix as it moved so freely. Similar to how the dancers should move towards the end of the song visuals as they are calm and in control. Furthermore, i was intrigued by the light reflected in the wet paint that mo

Page Layout in Sketchbook

When adding the new experiments to my sketchbook i thought about the best way to present them.     I first set the experiments out in this position as they all had their own space and gaps for writing about the process of creating. I also grouped the experiments that were similar, for instance all these experiments were done together involving the same mixture of paint pouring. However these experiments were done so i could work out the right mixture to paint pour in the film frame images. Therefore i decided to set out the experiments in the similar style of film footage in a straight line.          I first set out the experiments in sets of two, i found it made the page less distracting   from the experiments. Then i set them out in threes, using the leaf due to the same size/shape of the paper and colours used. Creating a pattern. However, i thought it made the page to full and i didnt have enough experiments to set them out this way.       I decided to set them out in

Netting

I poured the remainder of the acrylic, water and PVA glue mixture onto the netting. I created this folds by tying the end together. I wanted the folds so the netting was similar to an underskirt with layers that the dancers would be wearing. I wish i filmed the paint dripping on it as i was surprised to see the paint run off as if it was on paper and not holes.      I really like this photo of the netting, alone on a black background. It makes the white pop and look unusual as the background is so clean compared to the netting. Unfortunately, the paint dried a little dull, i think if it was more vibrant it would really add another layer to this photo.     To develop this i would like to try placing the netting differently for different styles of layering it. Additionally, i could paint each layer a separate colour then see how they show through altogether.      I took these photos to see inside the netting whilst the paint was still wet. The way the paint rested as little drop

Flip Book Development

I created another flip book to develop my skill further. I drew people instead of stick figures and drew a background to set the scene. I struggled with tiny features such as hands and faces so didnt draw them. I also didn't include any shadows as in dreams usually people dont see their reflection or shadows. I painted with watercolour so the colour was not too bold and distracting from the movement.   I drew over lines using biro so they would stand out as the watercolour did fade the pencil lines. However, i think the watercolour softened the pages, making them easier to flip. I personally dont like the cartoon style of the drawings, due to the lack of detail. Furthermore, sizes of the tree, building and people do change throughout the pages. However i dont think it is as bad as my first tries especially towards the end i think the sizes stay pretty much the same.    Last of all, i ran out of pages towards the end meaning there are a few jumps between the movements. I foc

Uncurling Video

I wrapped this piece of paper string round itself really tight then let go and watched it uncurl. I was first intrigued by the triangular shape created when it unwrapped and how it jumped up. Overall the unpredictable shape it creates all together. I could re create these shapes in other art pieces as i found the action of the development interesting. To me it shows the mind of a daydreamer bursting out and taking control.     I took this photo of the string afterwards. I wish i took a few more photos at different angles as this doesnt show how the string has popped out due to take the photo from above. I really like the uncurling shape as it reminds me of the tunnel in Coraline, which i view as depicting similar things to daydreamers as at first she chooses the "fantasy" world as it is more fun until she realises the other mother wants to keep her trapped there as a ghost. I really like the shadow around the edges of the red as it is incredibly dark and the looming sha

Cracks

I took a few photos of cracks in the wall before they were filled in. I found the cracks incredibly interesting as they were deep in the wall and quite wide. I thought these would be a useful reference for the buildings in my visuals as the walls are cracking/falling apart as they turn into ruins. I thought the lines they created were intriguing as they are all connected but also thought i could try to re create them in my art. For instance layering paint then creating these lines, i could possibly draw the cracks over a painting of a girls face to show how this is in her mind or how she is trapped behind the walls. Or i could paint on some wood and actually carve the cracks into the wood.       Close up of cracks showed layers in the walls with paint, cement and brick. I noticed the colours red, brown and green. The green surprised me, however this is a useful reference for a colour pallet when creating a piece focused on the ruin building. I also noticed the rough edges in c

Flip Book

I created a flip book so i could create movement in the drawing. As i had never done one before i only drew a simple stick figure as i also struggled drawing so small. I found consistency is important to create a flip book as part way through the size of my drawing changes slightly. Unfortunately, due to the drawing being of a stick figure its not so obvious to what is happening and doesnt look quite so elegant. I was trying to show the processes of the ballet dancers i took photos of lifting their leg up and going onto the tip of their toes. Furthermore, the paper of the book i used is too thick which makes flipping it a little difficult and the drawing doesnt move so swiftly because of it. However, i do think this is an efficient way to create an animation and i would like to develop my skill and try it again in the future.    I used the space above to create another small animation, this time i drew two figures joining to perform a lift. I like this one more as it is more o

Paint Videos

Whilst doing some string pulling experiments with watered down acrylic, i filmed how the water acted and the paint mixed as i thought the movements were intriguing and the process of colour change.    In the first video the colour purple infiltrated the blue water i added to the page and as i lifted the page the way it moved, even danced in the water, was really fascinating and unpredictable.    I was using this paint to cover a face drawing i had drew previously using biro. I decided i didnt like it and would paint thinly over to show how the dreamer feels like she is drowning in her own mind. I feel like how the paint acted, before painting over the face, with the two colours was interesting as if they were performing to attract the dreamer before taking over her whole mind. I would like to film more of colours mixing and moving in water. Even though the paint didnt instantly react to the water being added i really like how the two colours of blue and black are present in

Improvements with Paint

As i said previously with this piece i wanted to drip the string in paint and let it drip/run  down as it was wrapped around. I decided to do my best to add paint to the string but could not dip the string in paint and get the full effect i had originally intended. However, i do believe by adding more colour has helped make the whole piece stand out and draw attention from the viewer, as before it was mostly monochrome colour except for a couple of red and green leaves. I think to improve this i would add some brighter colours that represent the colourful dancers, for instance yellow as the cheerful colour would stand out strongly from black and a deep blue. I like how the watered down acrylic has dripped a little as the string represents the dreamer being trapped by her dream and the dripping colour shows how the dream (colourful dancers) are in control and influencing the dreamer to stay.     I created this biro drawing by tracing, roughly, the outline of the face using a pr
