Photo shoot: Ballet Class

I went to a ballet class to take photos of dance positions to use in my art and understand the movement of ballet more. I found it incredibly helpful as i now understand how some of the choreography works and processes of performing the dance. I find ballet really beautiful and elegant, all the dancers appeared very calm and relaxed as they performed. However, when talking to a few after their class i was told how they were frustrated on their mistakes and the pain that comes with ballet on the inside but performing did help them feel calm and was enjoyable. I thought this was similar with the emotions i was presenting in my visuals. In real life the singer appears calm however on the inside she is full of anxiety which is conveyed through the dance of the other dancers (her thoughts and emotions) hence why she appears most calm as she watches them.    It was difficult to get clear photos when the dancers were moving however the blurs help show that there is ...

Observational Drawings of Installation

I did some observational drawings of this piece whilst it was hanging. I wish that i drew these at a different perspective and angle to show i am looking at a piece hanging, creating formation and an object, instead i drew what i saw straight on of the board and not the actual board itself.    All drawings were drawn in four minutes.     My first drawing was a continuous line using biro. I quite enjoyed this technique as it is very free flowing. However, i struggle to focus on capturing details and creating shading. I think i need to improve this by focusing on one singular object at a time.I also found that i just drew one line to represent the string, making them appear as violent scribbles instead of string. I see the benefit of this appearance as it shows frustration of the singer who feel trapped, however i grew annoyed as i wanted to draw the string.          This drawing is difficult to see as i used coloured ...

Installation

In ten minutes i created this piece without preparation and using materials on hand. I used string and metal to represent the roughness and collapsing buildings inspired by Spinalonga and the bareness of the black background. I included some flowers and colourful leaves to create the influence of overgrown wildlife in the visuals.     The bird image appears very out of place as it is a clear image. To me this represents imagination against the black background, showing the isolation and how the singer is filling that void with dreams. In the visuals the only other company the singer has is the dancers, the birds could represent that company or even be singing birds showing the musical connection. Using wire, i hung this from the ceiling, allowing it to spin, like the dancers. I wrapped this piece in string as it prevents the viewer from seeing everything as well as traps the image together, just like the singer is trapped in her dreams.     I really l...

First Video Experiment

As i am looking into movement for the dancers of my visuals i will attempt to create some videos. I quickly experimented one night with simple video editing. I decided to take multiple photos as i moved my position and later edited them together with my chosen song. As this was a quick experiment the photos are not well planned. I would prefer to have taken them in a set that would suit the visuals i plan more rather than my bedroom. Additionally, they would look better with an actual dancer.     I ended up taking these photos in gaps once i realised i was missing areas, meaning some photo positions are out of place and there are some jumps between photos. However, i liked creating a video using photos as the still movement i felt expressed how the singer is stuck in her dream that is not real whilst "existing" merely in the real world where she isnt truly living. Like she is stuck jumping between the two. It appears like a video that doesn't have enough signal ...

Photos- Light

I noticed the sunlight on the water from my shower and was fascinated by how i could see the lines of water. I took photos from an upward angle, downward and straight on. Each perspective changed how the movement of the water looked looked. I was also took by how the water shined, appearing like falling diamonds.     I took photos of this candle as it has pressed flowers and leaves around the edge. I will press some flowers as well and use them in paintings or collages. I liked how the candle light illuminated through, it made me think about my chosen song and how her love for her crush inspired her to want to live in reality. However she lost her chance, just like how a candle can easily be blown out. I really like this metaphor and will devlop it through experiments of the visuals.

Development:

I decided to develop the drawings i did when experimenting with the use of the projector. I felt that these drawings were quite bad as they were quick sketches and details were out of place. For instance the scribbles on the dancers faces look odd and ruin the drawing. As i was looking into rough painting i decided to try experiment with the style. I think between the two my favourite outcome of the paint is of the face, The random pop of colour in the hair and mix of bright colours. I quite like the outcome when using a pallet knife and scraping it down the page with all the colours. The way the colours mix and still stand out from one another. Furthermore, adding paint to the drawing helped illuminate the green pen drawing. On the other hand some features are out of place, for instance the eyes are slightly ff and the lips.    For the dancers, i found acrylic paint to be too runny to mix with colours. I think oil paint might work better. I got the paint...
