I found Crete to be a very beautiful and peaceful area. It had a range of picturesque places, that were colourful and soft, as well as run down areas that i found interesting as it shows different compositions of objects and textures. I found myself quite drawn to rough materials, also bright, solid, colours and patterns. This photo i took of the mountains, from the view of the hotel, i found to be very breath taking. The sun was beginning to set creating a soft gradient of blue to pink. To me the mountains dont look real as if it was a backdrop for an old film. With the mix of delicate colours and long distance helped to create a satisfying feeling for me as it appears completely artificial.
Additionally, this photo, taken in the city of Aglos Nikolaos, of the sea has an incredible strong blue colour creating the majority of the background, making the orange flowers stand out brighter. The colour blue brings a peaceful feel as the photo appears open and free. However, the flowers become central in the composition as the orange adds life and warmth. Together this combination makes a tropical appeal within the photo. Without context the photo looks to be apart of a small, isolated island near a beach. However it was actually taken by the side of a road near a city. The idea of being able to zoom in on something particular, capturing it and isolating it from the rest of the world so it can become something different is fascinating to me. I wish at the time i had turned round to take photos of the road behind me so it could become a set of three, exposing the truth as well as how lost beautiful nature can become.
Nature always intrigues me as it is uncontrollable, therefore brings natural beauty and wonder that is open to any person. I really like to see the contrast of colourful life growing in dark areas like between buildings. It shows how cold humans can be as they carelessly destroy the planet. Furthermore, it shows this idea that no matter how much we try nature will always return and overgrow whatever we built as nature is unstoppable. This photo is not my best one as the angle and lighting is not so good. If i had turned to the left more so the flower was seen against the grey brick only i think it would of looked more effective. Or i could have taken a step back as the flower was growing in a window of the brick wall, therefore capturing more of the wall would of exploit the idea of nature being unstoppable as it continues to grow through the cracks.
Rough materials that caught my eye was different types of rust with the colours and different markings, as well as wood where paint has came off and the wood looks sanded down. It created a feelings of loss of what use to be there. Instead of covering it up with more paint i want to expose it to show its own history. The rust and wood showed different layers that told its each own chapter in its life. I really like the idea of having some sort of material and taking layers off it until i reach the end so i can see the differences. Or creating a piece of art that had different layers of materials and painting. Then carefully taking off those layers in one area so the whole image is still understandable but also creating this separate piece within it.
I took a close up photo of a tree where the trunk has created some interesting lines and holes. The material was really mesmerising and bewitching as it made me think about old fairy tales with woods full of incredibly old tress. The way the wood has created curves in the lines and circles was unique and i thought would be an interesting material to work into a piece. Other plants that interested me were these photos where the light reflected, creating some light areas, similar to when light shines on the water. Using light in art has always interested me but ive never been able to experiment with it within paintings, use of different materials and using actual lights. Lighting can change the atmosphere hugely and i would really like to experiment on creating those contrasts. However, the way the natural light has changed the photo when using the camera i thought was really effective and would like to develop some of these camera/light techniques into my work.
Another material that interest me is glass. I took this photo close up of a glass table. The different shades created by the light and translucent glass was appealing to me and i thought that when i do experiment with light i could also use glass. It would be an interesting combination with many different possible outcomes. For instance different coloured glass layered up, different shapes and adding more material on top like paint and card. Additionally the way i use the light could differ the outcome completely, like where the light is coming from, how much and how bright the light is, etc.
Overall i am really interested in creating some art that experiments with the viewers senses. Not just what they see but also hear, feel and sound. It reminds me of interactive parts in museums i went to as a child. How engaged i was and fascinated as it felt i had stepped into another world. I would really like to create a space that the viewer could walk through.
