Dance

I was able to go to a dance class and take photos of the dancers dancing. I wanted to do this so i could focus on their movement, primarily the movement of their skirts.  Luckily for me, for this dance they wore brightly coloured skirts. I got some various photos of the skirts movement when walking in different directions and spinning. I really like the photos where the dancers held their skirts and moved them in motions that captured a circular shape; the shape looks very interesting as it shows a vicious yet delicate movement, and each dancers was unique.        It would've been useful if i could have made the dancers try certain poses or movements that i wanted to see to be able to draw from. However, i plan to do another photo shoot dedicated to this so it is more in the image that i imagine in my art.Additionally, having another person to take photos from a different angle would have helped as i moved around i missed opportunities of planning good angles to take photos

Artist- Micayla Gatto

I dont particularly like Micayla Gatto's art as it doesnt create a huge interest in me as i dont connect to it emotionally. However i do like her use of vibrant colours, especially the electric blue in the first photo, strong lines and shapes used throughout her different works of mountains and scenery.     Each section of her work is different in details and colours, which is what drew me to her work originally.  Furthermore, her work contains layers in them which is something i would really like to focus on when creating my own work. Creating layers through use of building up on different materials as well as drawing and painting together as i am always too impatient and rush the process of building up the details.

Artist- Mara Light

Whilst looking at Jenna Andersons art i came across the artist Mara Light. Lights work Focuses on young women in rough, aged appearing paintings. The artists creates beautifully detailed paintings of girls that almost look like porcelain dolls, however the painting itself looks rough and marked up with drips in her work. The contrast of perfection and a sense of neglect to the work conveys the women with the feeling of loss and abandonment. Possibly exposing how their lives are not perfect despite their appearance.       Mara Lights work really captures my attention with the texture as well as the emotions conveyed in the work through the women and their body language. They all look hopeless and lost and all have a story of their own. I have pictured myself creating some artwork with a similar style to Lights and now by using Lights work as a preference i have a chance to look at the details in the rough areas to try and recreate as well as add on extra materials for inst

Artist- Jenna Anderson

Jenna Andersons art instantly caught my attention when i came across it. The amount of details in her works of beautiful forests and abandoned places haunted by faceless spirits in a world she has created of another time. I love the incomplete style of her work, lack of colour creating a quick sketch feel to the black and white drawings. However making the little bit of colour added even more captivating and bright as she uses it to connect the living and the dead in her mesmerising work.      Anderson also creates paintings, some self portraits and of certain scenery. She has a rough but detailed style in her paintings which i feel adds to the story created in her work, a feel of real life which is never perfect. The way she has created the reflection in the mirror as well as the light from the windows really bring a realistic feel to this room as if you could just step into it.     I have a huge interest in Andersons choice of subject in her "Restless Spirits" wor

Artist- Nester Formentera

Formentera is a bic pen artist, illustrator, pencil and colour pencil realism artist. He is inspired by his personal emotions and surroundings. I especially like his line works as he focuses on the body which has always interested me on how simple body language conveys a lot of meaning and internal emotions.      His line works make the body lack features however is still incredibly detailed with the lines outlining the body's shape like a silhouette. I enjoy the idea of including a little bit of this style of drawing in a piece to add an abstract element and distance the viewer from the person drawn. Similar to the artist Chrysoula Skepetzi who also makes her subjects lack features to prevent the viewer from connecting to the subjects.        It would be interesting to experiment with shapes and different forms of lines, maybe overlap lines and try different colours etc. Also i would like to attempt this using different materials for the background like tissue paper or

Crete: Artist- Chrysoula Skepetzi

Whilst in Crete i visited an art gallery showing the works of  Chrysoula Skepetzi. I had never heard of this artist before however her work felt familiar. What first caught my eye in Skepetzi`s work was her use of bold colours. Bright colours really attract me, but i soon became more fascinated with the use of newspaper and shadows that looked so realistic. Each piece had shadows following the person which made me think about light again. Additionally, how she incorporates newspaper into the surroundings or shadows in a controlled manner was really interesting. Her painting style, using oil on canvas, distances the viewer from the crowd. No one is singled out as the focus; instead they lose their features making them unrecognisable. Skepetzi disregards tone, line and background. This is an interesting concept that i would like to try in my art, I enjoy drawing the body but do not like including the face as a recognisable person; i find it distracting unless the main focus is suppose

Crete: Collected

I bought eight postcards whilst in Crete. I chose pictures from various places in Greece as they were all really beautiful, picturesque and colourful. I would really like to create a colour pallet of the colours used so i can use them for reference when doing work later on. Furthermore, the postcards capture the beauty of Greece but not every single place looks like that so i like the idea of creating similar postcards but instead of more run down areas for comparison.      These few objects here are memoirs that came from the trip that i thought i could use in my work. The blue band was for all inclusive at the hotel, the paper bag was from a local shop where i bought some of the postcards and lastly a small piece from a dried up plant i found. I have another branch but it did fall apart a little. I brought it home with me as i found it similar to a plant i saw growing on the side of some roads. I like the white colour as it looks unnatural for a plant which is usually asso

Spinalonga

History is a huge interest of mine and i love exploring ruins as it is a gateway into the past. I was able to visit the island of Spinalonga whilst i was in Crete. It was first built on in 1578 for defence purposes by Venetians, however was captured by Ottoman Turks in 1715. Later, in 1878, Cretens revolted eventually causing all Ottomans to leave the island by 1903. Spinalonga was then used as a leper colony until 1957. At first patients lived isolated in their own community, living in caves and the ruins on the island. The community was eventually built up with houses, a hospital and patients were able to live their lives, get married and have children. A priest was the last person to leave the island in 1962 as it is tradition of the Greek Orthodox church to commemorate a buried person 40 days, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years and 5 years after their death.    The history was really intriguing to me as so much has happened and changed on this small island. The ruins interested me most

Crete

I found Crete to be a very beautiful and peaceful area. It had a range of picturesque places, that were colourful and soft, as well as run down areas that i found interesting as it shows different compositions of objects and textures. I found myself quite drawn to rough materials, also bright, solid, colours and patterns. This photo i took of the mountains, from the view of the hotel, i found to be very breath taking. The sun was beginning to set creating a soft gradient of blue to pink. To me the mountains dont look real as if it was a backdrop for an old film. With the mix of delicate colours and long distance helped to create a satisfying feeling for me as it appears completely artificial.    Additionally, this photo, taken in the city of  Aglos Nikolaos, of the sea has an incredible strong blue colour creating the majority of the background, making the orange flowers stand out brighter. The colour blue brings a peaceful feel as the photo appears open and free. However, the fl
